Vanessa Morman's novel, KONFLICT OF INTEREST, is an interesting read that intertwines romance, mystery, politics and the armed forces. Yaniesha "Yani" Bowe is a United States Air Force Captain that is kidnapped while on vacation because it is believed that she witnessed a murder. Her kidnapper is the gorgeous and ever so dangerous Alec Poore. Yani and Alec marry out of convenience and soon find themselves mutually attracted to one another. Yet, there is a small problem. Instead of being the notorious crime loard Yani thought he was, Alec is revealed to be Agent Quansi Harrington with the FBI. Drama ensues when Yani is not sure who she is married to and when multiple women stake claims to both Alec and Quansi. Both parties are forced to look deep within themselves and within each other to establish trust, a meaningful relationship, and most importantly to stay alive.
KONFLICT OF INTEREST is a well-written novel that is at times slow and a bit far-fetched, but still keeps the reader engrossed through over 400 pages. The story spans over several decades and allows the reader an opportunity to feel a real connection with all of the characters. Morman does an excellent job portraying women and the military in an extremely positive light, while at the same time exposing potential problems within the government and its agencies. I recommend this novel to those looking for an intelligent, yet romantic, action-filled read.

Someone is diverting equipment and intelligence to terrorists, and Air Force Colonel Shebra Wesley intends on finding out whom and stopping them. Her unit, called Shadow Team, has been given the authority and tools to infiltrate terrorist cells and bring them down. While on assignment, she does battle with a tall, dark, handsome, Russian. At least she believes him to be Russian until
she checks out his file and discovers he is a top CIA agent. She's attracted to him, but if he is the traitor she seeks, she will take him out.
CIA agent Niece Watson's brother-in-law has been murdered, Niece's sister is missing, and now he's just had his butt kicked by a masked woman. He didn't realize he was fighting a woman until it was too late. Searching to find his brother-in-law's murderer, the whereabouts of his sister, and discovering the identity of his mystery woman consume him. Once he and Shebra meet again, sparks
fly, yet neither fully trusts the other. He lowers his guard around her, but soon finds out that she is all business, or is she?
Vanessa Morman's action packed novel kept me going. The plot was filled with intrigue, suspense, sensuality, and love. I also enjoyed her incorporation of a multicultural cast of characters. Each had his or her own personality and voice, which was refreshing. Unfortunately, there were quite a few issues that took away from my enjoyment of SPECIAL DUTY. There could have been quite a bit more balance between the men and women. I'm not saying the women had to be damsels in distress, but don't make the men dudes in distress. At times the author went a little out there for me. For example, when she decided that the government should hire prostitutes to go into certain dangerous situations instead of the female troops because if prostitutes are raped they can handle it better. Despite the issues I had with SPECIAL DUTY, the
storyline kept my interest all the way to the cliffhanger end, and I do recommend this novel.

Special Duty: A Woman's Work
A terrorist cell is operating out of Whistler, Blackcomb, BC, the setting of the Brotherhood of Skiers, Black Ski Summit, which sets the stage for murder, intrigue and passion on the slopes. To compound matters, he encounters mystery woman Shebra whose renegade actions make him question if she's friend or foe. His questions mount along with his desire for the masked espionage queen.
